How long should your content for SEO?
· Some
people seem to think all content should be 500 words, some 1000 and some even
5000 words. My answer is always the same though, don't guess.
· Instead
of guessing, build on what we know is already working, and I mean if we look at
the first page for the keywords that you want to target, we look at the
websites that are already on the first page and see how many words does he use
That's a much better way to go about it.
They have a two-step process
for this:
·
The
first step is to average the top three websites and the second step is plus 10%
contingencies so we know what they are about. It works really, really well for
me and has never let me down.
·
Basically
what we're doing here is mimicking what already works.
·
If the
first three websites on the first page are around 1500 words, then you want to
follow them and also have 1500 Words.
·
However,
adding another 10% will ensure that you are better than them. But don't add
another 10% of words just for the sake of it. You need to make sure that your
content is actually worthwhile and provides value.
·
So
instead of just giving you this information, I'd like to go one step further.
So now we're going to go to Google and I'll show you exactly how it works with
a live tutorial.
So let's imagine a keyword
you want to be on the first page for, do you need a yoga mat?
·
I simply
went to Google and searched for this keyword. So, do you need a yoga mat? Then
I'll take the top three sites to rank one, which I've already done.
·
So I
have Yoga International, exercise.co.uk and Livestrong. So I opened all the
websites in a new tab, you can already see here and simply what I would do is I
would open another tab for this website called wordcounter.net and I would
simply go to each website and copy all the words and paste them into the word counter.
So let's do it right now.
·
So copy
this and then paste it into the word counter. So that's the first finished
website that can go.
·
Second
website; we copy all content. It seems a little longer than the first one,
we'll copy it. And we're going to put it in the word counter, right at the
bottom as well.
·
Now we
have the second website done, let's look at the third website. We copy this
entire content. Oh, I'm not sure what happened there.
·
Let's
strip it all down. It seems to be very similar.
·
To be
honest, it seems pretty equivalent. We’ll put it in there.
·
And as
you can see, we have 2,905 words on three different websites. So simply what I
would do is go to an online calculator. Enter 2905, 2905.
·
Divide
that by three because we reviewed three websites which would give me an average
of 968 words. So again it's an average.
·
What I
recommend you do is actually add another 10%. So it's going to be literally,
another 96, so plus 96, which gives us a total of 1064 words.
·
Again,
you don't have to work with exactly 1064, but if I were creating the content,
then I would make sure my content is around the 1000 word mark because I know I
can fit in with what other sites are doing on the first page.
